How Deep Can You Pour Epoxy in One Layer?

It is the question that decides whether your project takes one weekend or three: how much epoxy can you actually pour at once?

Pour too shallow and you add days of waiting and a sanding step between every layer. Pour too deep and the resin can overheat in the middle, and overheating is what causes the cracks and the soft spots people blame on "bad epoxy."

Here is the honest answer for each Superclear product, why the limit exists, and what to do when your project is deeper than one pour.

The short answer: maximum pour depth by product

Every epoxy has a depth ceiling, and it is set by the chemistry, not by the brand. Ours are:

Two things in that table matter more than the numbers themselves.

Deep Pour and Table Top are not interchangeable. Liquid Glass Deep Pour is a 2:1 casting resin built to be poured thick. Table Top is a 1:1 coating built to be spread thin. Pouring a coating resin deep is the single most common way people ruin a project. If you are not sure which you have, we wrote a full comparison here.

"Up to 4 inches" is a ceiling, not a target. How close you can get to it depends on two things we will get to next: temperature and total mass.

Why epoxy has a depth limit at all

Curing epoxy is an exothermic reaction. The resin and the hardener react, and that reaction gives off heat.

In a thin coat, that heat escapes into the air about as fast as it is produced, and nothing dramatic happens. In a thick pour, the heat in the middle of the mass has nowhere to go. It builds. And because the reaction runs faster as it gets hotter, heat produces more heat.

Left unchecked, that is what causes a pour to build stress and crack, or to cure with soft or hot spots in it. It is the same mechanism behind a rule that surprises a lot of first-timers: when you clamp wood into a deep pour, only finger-tighten the clamps. As the epoxy cures the wood needs room to flex. Without it, pressure builds in the epoxy, which means stress, increased heat, and even cracking.

The depth limit is simply the point past which the middle of your pour can no longer shed heat fast enough.

Depth is only half the story: mass and temperature

This is the part most depth guides leave out, and it is the reason two people can pour the same product at the same depth and get different results.

Total mass matters as much as depth. A 4 inch pour into a small mold and a 4 inch pour down an eight-foot river table are not the same event. The big one has far more reacting material generating heat in one place. Our own guidance on Liquid Glass Deep Pour puts it plainly: the mass for a 4 inch pour varies depending on temperature and conditions, and if you have never poured at 4 inches, try it on a smaller scale first to see how it behaves in your shop.

Temperature sets your real ceiling. Ideal working temperature is 70 to 84°F, but that range assumes a sensible volume. The rule from our own technical guidance is worth memorising:

The greater the volume or thickness of the pour, the lower your temperatures should be.

So a modest pour in a 78°F shop is fine. That same product, at maximum depth, down a long table, in a 84°F shop, is asking for trouble. If you are pouring deep, pour at the cooler end of the range.

If you want to know roughly how much resin your pour will take before you think about depth at all, the arithmetic is simple: length × average width × depth in inches, divided by 231 (the number of cubic inches in a US gallon), plus about 10% for waste. What to do when your project is deeper than one pour

Most river tables and thick casts are deeper than a single pour. That is normal, and layering is not a compromise. It is the correct method.

The timing rule is the whole game:

  1. Pour your first layer within the product's maximum depth.
  2. Pour the next layer while the first is still tacky and nearly hard. This is the easy path. The layers bond chemically and you skip sanding entirely.
  3. If the first layer has already gone hard, do not pour on top of it as-is. Sand it lightly with 220 to 320 grit and wipe it down with 90%+ isopropyl alcohol first. That gives the next layer something to grip.

Skipping step 3 is how you get a visible line between layers, or worse, a layer that delaminates later.

A few more things that protect a deep pour:

  • Seal the wood first. Porous wood and bark outgas into the pour and give you a channel full of bubbles. Brush on a seal coat of Table Top Epoxy, let it get tacky, and pour into that. If the seal coat has fully cured, sand it with 320 grit and clean it with isopropyl alcohol before pouring.
  • Mix properly, and stop scraping when you pour. Stir at least 5 minutes, scraping the sides and bottom, then transfer everything to a second clean bucket and mix 3 minutes more. When you pour, do not scrape the bucket. Scraping at that point drags unmixed resin off the sides into your pour, and that is where soft and tacky spots come from.
  • Keep the heat gun moving and high. Hold it at least 6 inches above the surface and sweep to release bubbles. Parked too long in one spot, it distorts the surface.
  • Give it the full time. Liquid Glass Deep Pour starts to harden in the first 12 to 24 hours, can be demolded as early as 48 hours, and is hard to the touch and ready to sand at around 72 hours. Leave it undisturbed in a dust-free space for that whole window. Full cure and maximum hardness come at 30 days.

Frequently asked questions

How deep can you pour epoxy in one layer? It depends entirely on the product. Superclear Liquid Glass Deep Pour 2:1 pours 2 to 4 inches in a single application, with a 1/2 inch minimum. 24 Hour Liquid Glass 2:1 goes up to 1 inch per layer. Table Top Epoxy 1:1 and Countertop Epoxy 2:1 are coatings and max out at 1/4 inch per pour.

Can I really pour 4 inches at once? Yes, with Liquid Glass Deep Pour, but 4 inches is the ceiling rather than a default. Whether you reach it depends on your shop temperature and the total mass of the pour. If you have never poured that deep, do a smaller test pour first so you know how it behaves in your conditions.

What happens if you pour epoxy too deep? The centre of the pour cannot shed the heat it generates as it cures. That can lead to stress and cracking, and to soft or hot spots in the cured piece. It is not usually a defect in the resin; it is too much mass curing at once.

How long do I wait between epoxy layers? Ideally you do not wait for a full cure. Pour the next layer while the previous one is still tacky and nearly hard, and the two bond chemically. If the first layer has already hardened, sand it with 220 to 320 grit and wipe it with 90%+ isopropyl alcohol before the next pour.

How deep can you pour table top epoxy? Up to 1/4 inch per pour. Table Top Epoxy is a 1:1 coating and is not designed for thick casting. For anything deeper, use Liquid Glass Deep Pour.

Does temperature change how deep I can pour? Yes. Work between 70 and 84°F, and bias toward the cooler end as the pour gets bigger or thicker. The greater the volume or thickness, the lower your temperature should be.

Pouring deep, done right

Match the product to the depth, respect the mass, keep the shop cool when the pour is big, and layer while the previous pour is still tacky. Do those four things and depth stops being the risky part of the project.
