Two bottles of clear epoxy can look identical on the shelf and behave nothing alike once you mix them. One is built to cast inches deep. The other is built to coat a surface in a thin, mirror-flat layer.
Pick the wrong one and you get a cracked, overheated slab or a river channel that never fills. Here is how we tell them apart.
Deep pour epoxy resin is a 2:1 casting resin formulated to be poured thick — Superclear Liquid Glass Deep Pour handles 2 to 4 inches in a single pour — while table top epoxy is a 1:1 coating resin that goes on no more than a quarter inch per pour. Deep pour fills a void; table top covers a surface. That one distinction decides almost every project.
The split between the two is a chemistry decision about heat, not a marketing one. Thick epoxy generates heat as it cures, so a casting resin like Liquid Glass Deep Pour is formulated to react slowly and shed that heat over a long gel time. A coating resin cures faster in a thin film, which is what you want on a table top and exactly what causes trouble if you pour it two inches deep.
That is why the mix ratios differ, and why they are not interchangeable.

A few numbers on that table deserve a note.
Deep pour asks for patience at the mixing stage. We stir for a full five minutes, transfer everything to a second clean bucket, and mix three minutes more — the double-bucket method — then pour without scraping the bucket. Scraped-in material from the sides is the most common cause of soft or tacky spots.
Table top epoxy is mass sensitive, which pulls the other way. Mix no more than a half gallon in one container, work between 70 and 84 degrees F, and spread it promptly with a squeegee, a notched trowel, or a gloved hand. The warmer your shop, the shorter your working time.
Both reach full cure and maximum hardness at 30 days. Hard to the touch in about a day is not the same as fully cured, and it is worth telling a client that before you deliver a piece.
Match the resin to the depth of the void you are filling, and the choice makes itself.
Every one of these cures crystal clear, zero VOC, and formulated to meet FDA guidelines for indirect food contact once fully cured — which matters most on the food-adjacent pieces.
Most river tables use both resins, in a specific order, and skipping the first one is a classic first-timer mistake.
Before a deep pour goes into a wood channel, we seal the raw wood with a thin coat of table top epoxy. Bare wood holds air, and that air escapes into your deep pour epoxy resin as a curtain of bubbles you cannot torch out from two inches down.
Brush the seal coat on, let it get tacky, then pour your deep pour straight onto it. If the seal coat has already cured hard, scuff it with 320-grit and wipe it down with 90% isopropyl alcohol first.
Then the order reverses. Once the cast has cured and you have sanded the top flat, a flood coat of epoxy resin for table tops brings back the glass-clear gloss across wood and resin alike.
Deep pour builds the depth. Table top delivers the finish.
Table top epoxy pours up to a quarter inch thick per application. Going deeper traps heat in the film and risks a soft or distorted cure. If you need more thickness, pour a second layer while the first is still slightly tacky — generally 2 to 6 hours later — or move to a casting resin.
We do not recommend it. A river channel is usually 1 to 2 inches deep, well past the quarter-inch-per-pour limit of a coating resin, and building it in quarter-inch lifts would take a dozen pours and a dozen chances for dust and bubbles. Use deep pour epoxy resin for the river, then table top for the final flood coat.
Liquid Glass Deep Pour gels in 10 to 12 hours, hardens enough to demold at 48 to 72 hours, and reaches full cure and maximum hardness at 30 days. Leave the piece undisturbed in a dust-free space for the first 72 hours. Cooler shops and smaller masses both stretch those windows.
